About the Artwork

One of the recurring themes in John's watercolors executed in Meudon was women or young girls kneeling or sitting in church. Sometimes there are several figures seen at a distance or one or more seen close up as if the artist were kneeling directly behind them. Usually they are done on small sheets of paper. This variation on a favorite theme is a particularly fine example with its large areas of a single color and pronounced outlines creating a strong patterning that imparts a very modern feeling to the composition. Such simple and direct observations display the freshness and naiveté that have increased John's reputation as an artist with a special vision.
