About the Artwork

The geometric regularity of the Madonna’s features is characteristic of Italian painting of this period, which strove for ideal beauty rather than the naturalistic depiction of a real person. While the Virgin exchanges glances with the young Saint John, the Christ Child looks directly at the viewer, involving us directly in the scene. His foot on the small cushion above a pure white cloth perhaps is meant to separate him from our earthly realm.
